Buzzed

There was only one time in my life I got my hair buzzed. In grade 7 my mom wanted to cut my hair but messed up, she then proceeded to shave it all off. I always thought I looked stupid so I never gave it a chance… But here I am more than a decade later.

Hasselblad re-issues 1969 press release on moon landing cameras

“Custom film backs were used to hold 70mm film that could handle 150-200 exposures per roll, and the camera that was used to shoot from the Moon’s surface was attached to Armstrong’s space suit.”

Imagine having that many shots… of the moon…

“Sadly, to lighten the Eagle so it could take off again two of the mission’s Hasselblad bodies and lenses were left on the Moon along with about $1 million worth of other equipment.”

Osaka-jo - Chūō-ku, Japan - Loop // 4

Not much to say about this place except I wish I had more time to explore the area of Osaka! We were only able to stay around for a day to check out the tourist crazed Osaka Castle (which we haven’t entered) along with its lush surroundings. Osaka castle or Osaka-jo, in Japanese, was the biggest castle we saw during our 11 day stay in Japan and it is definitely worth seeing If you are in the area!

Sleepy Eyes

Unfortunately had some problems with a sticky shutter when I went on this trip but decided to combine some of these photos together. Hope to be hearing from the Hasselblad doctor soon so I can be reunited with it again (light leak free).

Kawasaki Warehouse, Tokyo

I been trying to do some more small projects so I can keep learning new things with the adobe suite, today’s project was to try to make a photo feel more alive. Some advantages with shooting video is being able to capture the things around you that photos cannot. Some of these cues are the things you can hear around you, capturing motion and lighting.

I thought it would be cool to share a really poor description on how I did it.

- FIRST THINGS FIRST, since there isn’t a ton of moving parts in the photo I thought it would be neat to bring some life into the lighting. This includes multiple lighting sources and surfaces it may be reflected on. There are many different ways to achieve this in After Effects but my methods included adding blurs, playing with blend modes and dropping some simple key frames.

- Good news! That was the hardest part. Once the file is exported I brought it to Premiere pro to work on 2 main things 1) Color grading and 2) Sound. Sound design is extremely important when it comes to video as it adds this extra layer of immersion. The sounds I used in this video weren’t particular to Kawasaki Warehouse, I decided to put my spin on it with some faint speaking, neon buzzing, elevator bells and music. I also lied about the hardest part being in After Effects, It’s really finding the right music.

- Some final touch ups I made include a slow zoom and movie grain (to give that still image some more movement).

So with the mix of after effects and premiere pro I was able to spit out this pretty cool video trying to create an atmosphere using a photo. What do you think?

Puerto Princessa, Philippines - Loop // 3

I can’t be the only one who thought a sandbar was a bar beside the beach? Turns out it was a long, narrow sand bank made by the oceans current depending on the season. Even with the lack of alcohol the view was quite beautiful as you make your way to the end of the floating docks. We didn’t quite make it to the sandbar this time around only cause it didn’t look like much. You had the option to wear some aquatic slippers and walk towards it or to take a small kayak! The hyper-lapse shows nothing I’m explaining but the view facing the resort from the floating dock.

Broken Beach - Bali, Indonesia - Loop // 2

Bali had many breathtaking views, So many places in so little time. We spent about 4 days in the Kuta area and everyday we had a tour seeing your typical touristy spots! I highly recommend going for at least a week instead of trying to catch everything in 4 days. Bali is so rich in culture and easily had the most amazing views from my Asia trip, going back is a definitely a MUST.

Loops

Not too long ago Sony came out with a fun hyper-lapse update for their cameras and I thought it would be neat to take advantage of the sharpness. Throughout this trip I’ve taken a collection of snippets and will be posting these fun loops on the gram soon!

LUCKY.

Sunday Brain Mush

Sony came out with a time-lapse feature (finally) so I thought I would give it a try! A little warm up for all the cool ones I’ll take for the upcoming Asia trip!

Earlier today I was feeling a bit inspired by another content creator who stitched photos together and made some rad video loops out of them. I tried to do it hand held and with things around my house, one thing lead to another BAM 4 hours later I ended up with this short kinda meaningless clip. (Second Video)

Hope you enjoy the contrast between the two clips… Also I love how I am able to share these random small projects onto my blog because most of them just end up being one time Instagram stories.

03.24.19 | Portra 400

The first few captures from the Hassy in Portra 400, absolutely mesmerized by the film colors and ability to render out a photo. Quite impressed with how they came out! Used my sisters ring light and metered the subjects with my Sony mirror-less camera. Only makes me more excited for whats to come.

HASSELBLAD

This month has been an extremely rough one, things have been changing and they have been changing fast. BUT this new toy has been picked up and I CANNOT wait to use this awesome new medium format camera! I wanted this year to be different for me by trying out new tools, methods and mediums to continue growing as a creative because I think I’ve been kinda stuck. Time to start fresh into 2019 with some more creativity, I’m also hoping to bring some cool ideas/ visuals out on the table AND TO SHOOT MORE FILM .

BOYS DON'T CRY

At some point I thought I’d never get to own one of these unless I paid for the re-sale BUT I’d like to thank Frank and his team for sending out a re-issue of the Boys Don’t Cry Magazine. I cannot wait for my eyes to feast on these torso sized pages. Also how beautiful is this wrap that I will never throw away? FEELS GOOD MAN.

A grand opportunity

NASA announced our long lived robot friend, opportunity, has lost all contact with us here on earth. For those who don’t know the red planet has been undergoing some extreme storms within the past few months and kept Opportunity stranded. For weeks the team has been working non-stop to reignite the communications with MER-B but just today NASA released to the public they will no longer be using our old friend. The rover launched to the planet mars back in 2003, which means it had just over a 14 year lifespan (since its landed). Considering how long that is NASA did not expect to have it driving on the harsh terrain for that long, so to many Opportunity was a huge success. If you want to read more about the rover and know what it has achieved for us I’ll leave a link here.

Just this week, our family lost our longtime furry member. I haven’t been so overwhelmed for such a long time and cried for days. I can’t even remember the last time I felt this sad. That morning, I woke up to my mother crying and I just knew what happened. The days after that moment I remember our home being so silent, and until now we have been trying to adjust to it. It’s a strange feeling doing a routine with her for 16 years, then having to wake up the next day to suddenly stop doing it. On one of the following mornings I was hanging around the TV room with my parents before I headed off to work. We were talking about how much we missed her and our TV starts playing this old video of Caramel doing tricks. I figured one of us must’ve turned it on with airplay but non of us did, let alone change the input of the TV to do that. We all began to bawl our eyes out more, but for some reason I felt some sort of comfort as if she was trying to tell us that she was alright. Some people might find that a little spooky but ever since that happened I’ve felt a lot less sad and more accepting of her passing. She lived a long joyful life of a princess and she knew how much we loved her. I honestly think she wanted us to remember her like she was in that video, healthy, perky and just happy. I think she wanted to tell us she was alright. Caramel is what brought our family together, she was the one getting all the attention and often the conversation starter after a long day at work. I don’t think I can put into words how much I love this dog. I hope you get to eat unlimited chicken bones and ice cream cones in doggy heaven. We miss you Caramel, love you <3 rest in peace puppy.
